The flexible circuit board, also known as the flexible board, is composed of conductor lines made on the surface of the flexible medium, and may or may not include a cover layer. Generally, the conductor and the flexible medium are glued together, although there are currently non-glue copper foil materials. The dielectric constant of the flexible board medium is relatively low, which can provide good insulation and impedance performance to the conductor. At the same time, the flexible medium is thin and flexible. It also has good tensile strength, versatility and heat dissipation performance.
Unlike ordinary PCBs (hard boards), FPCs can be bent, folded or repetitively moved in many ways. In order to tap the full potential of FPC, designers can use a variety of structures to meet various needs, such as single-sided, double-sided, multi-layer, and rigid-flex board. There are currently two types of flexible boards on the market: printed ( Etching) and silk screen. Silk-screened flexible board is also called polymer thick film
(Polymer Thick Film, PTF for short) flexible board. Unlike ordinary printing and etching technology, PTF technology uses other processes to directly screen-print conductive ink on the dielectric film as a conductor. Although the application of PTF flexible board continues to expand (such as the very popular membrane switch), the printed flexible board is still the most widely used of the two. This design specification mainly focuses on the structure and design method of the printed flexible circuit board (Flexible Printed Circuit, FPC for short). The flexible board mentioned in this specification also refers to the flexible printed circuit board.
